Went to it for the first time this last Wednesday. I saw Bridget Gray (You go girl!) and Kid Beyond, along with a whole gang of amateurs, many of whom were quite inspiring.

The headliners ROCKED. I actually bought Bridget's CD and signed up on Kid's mailing list (no CD published). Bridget had this one bit on the state of hip hop that had me cheering. Why's it gotta be so ghetto, harsh on women, and exlusionary, etc. What happened to holding up a fist and proclaiming unity? I was all about that. Hell yeah.

Kid Beyond threw out this "set" using only his mouth that most DJs would have a hard time emulating with 1000 records and quad turntables. I was so impressed... I kept looking to see if the drummer was helping or if there was some sort of background track playing. There wasn't, because he improvised here and there, acknowledging the audience's input. Absolutely amazing. I had no idea human vocal cords could produce the sounds that came out of that man.

Anyhow. Go listen to "My letter to Hip Hop" and start loving one another instead of blaming, judging, and hating.

I went up to Bridget after the show and thanked her for letting it be ok for me to participate in her vision of unity. Amen, sister.
